It's a stunning site near the panoramic view of "les salins", La Palme's pound and Mediterranean sea.

The ancient millstones Quarry

marbre-4Near the St Pancrace Chapel, millstones prints can be seen at the ancient quarry, notched on the floor with cylindrical cuts on the rock. The stones were used to make wheels for grinding wheat and regional oil.

You can see 2 big millstones by the water mill. at "Désiré Pech" square. 


Back in the days, the first fields surrounding the village were cultivated for wheat as the earth was rich for it. Land under vines were then those in the periphery of these plantations. At the time, peasants went to work with horses from morning until night. It's near those fields that farmers discovered that the stones were propitious for grinding their harvest.

 


Possible itinary from "Place du 18 juin 1940" :

Go right on "Rue Frédéric Mistral". At the top of the street, go left "Avenue San Brancat" toward the cemetery. Continue toward "l'Oratoire". At the section, go to the right, and the first route from the right. You are at "la Croix de Fer". Follow straight until the departemental road 6009, that you need to cross over (Beware of vehicules). Carry on until the tunel under the A9 highway, and you'll find the quarry a little further away.
